When looking for a contractor, it’s easy to start with the biggest company. It’s easy to assume that if they’re bigger, they’ll have more employees, they’ll know what they are doing, etc. Some of these companies are fantastic. Some are just bigger but not necessarily better.
Sometimes too many cooks in the kitchen CAN spoil the meal.
That’s why it can be nice to work with a smaller “boutique” company. The personal attention each job gets is often what keeps the job on time and on budget.
Regardless of who you choose to partner with be sure to ask some of the following questions.
Who will be your primary point of contact? Will you have an exclusive point of contact?
Will you get daily updates?
Will you have access to a working schedule?
If something isn’t going well will you have access to a superior?
Making sure you are a good fit with the builder is critical for the success of the project. Most people know early on when it’s not a good fit but are reluctant to keep looking because it can be a real time commitment to shop around for the right builder. Most of those people wish they had done the due diligence and kept looking. Don’t be afraid to dig deep and ask a lot of questions. It’s your house after all!
